::Stigmergy::

Stigmergy is a robotic art installation based on a physical simulation of the food-gathering behaviour of ants. Two robots travel around a darkened arena looking for food (copper plates on the floor). When they find food they head back to the nest (an IR beacon), leaving trails of glowing light to mark the path to the food.

Over time the marks build up to form glowing patterns on the floor, which gradually fade in a simulacrum of real pheremone trails. Stigmergy was made possible by using very fast reacting glow paint and UV LEDs which activate it almost immediately.

Stigmergy was exhibited at the Big Blip '04, Brighton.
